Human fibrinogen is used in patients who require rapid support of blood clotting. For example, in cases of severe bleeding or complex surgical procedures.
When a manufacturer in Germany was unable to supply the product for an extended period, a risk of shortages arose. The availability of this treatment for hospitals came under pressure, meaning patients might not be treated in time.
Due to the supply problems, hospitals risked running out of sufficient stock. As a result, a shortage of human fibrinogen threatened patients who required this treatment.
There was therefore an urgent need for a reliable solution: making stock available from other European countries.
Orphamed was engaged to address the shortage. Thanks to a strong European network, available stocks of human fibrinogen from ten different EU countries were collected and made available to German hospitals.
The entire process was then coordinated: from identifying available stock to logistics and delivery to hospitals. This ensured that the available quantities quickly reached the locations where they were needed most.
By bringing together available stocks from ten EU countries and making them rapidly available to German hospitals, the impending shortage could be prevented.
Thanks to this approach, human fibrinogen remained available for 121 German hospitals.
Healthcare institutions were able to continue treating their patients despite the prolonged supply problems.
This case demonstrates how rapid action, international cooperation and reliable delivery help overcome medicine shortages.
